A Message From Our Owner, Rich

The best camping hot tents are a necessity during long or cold weather trips, especially in the backcountry. I live in a canvas wall tent six to seven weeks a year while hunting elk, deer, and bear in the Idaho wilderness. I designed the Wilderness canvas hot tent based on my tenting experience of 50 years. All canvas hot tents and stoves have been thoroughly tested in the harshest weather conditions.

Tent Options

We offer canvas hot tents in 5 general categories:

  1. Tent Only: Wilderness or Montana Canvas
  2. Tent and Angle Kit to Make Frame
  3. Tent and Complete Frame
  4. Tent, Angle Kit to Make Frame, Tarp Fly & Stove
  5. Tent, Complete Frame, Tarp Fly & Stove

Sizes Available

  • Small hot tents start at 8’ x 10’. Suitable for 2 people when using a stove.
  • Large hot tents are 16’ x 24’. Suitable for up to 6 people when used with a stove.
  • Other sizes available are 10’ x 12’, 12’ x 14’, 14’ x 16’, and 16’ x 20’.

6-Foot Side Walls

6' side walls provide much more headroom and usable space for heated tents.

I strongly recommend you ask your suppliers the finished height of the side walls before purchasing a tent. Be advised that some tent companies advertise a 5' sidewall, but the actual height is only 4'7".

6' is a much more luxurious-looking tent that many glampers purchase. Walking into a tent with 6-foot walls looks much bigger than a tent with standard 5-foot walls.

6' option only available on fire, water, and mildew-treated tents.

Wilderness canvas wall tents are the same tent models we also sell as glamping tents, camping hot tents, and winter tents. Our Wilderness tent is very high quality and the most reinforced canvas wall tent available. That is why we use it on all canvas hot tent models.

All Wilderness Wall Tent Shop hot tents for sale are made from canvas. Most websites selling hot tents are made from a synthetic material. Canvas is much more durable and stronger than synthetic materials. The best hot tent with stove is made from canvas if you need a strong or durable tent that will be left up for long periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hot tent?

Wall Tent Shop camping hot tents for sale are designed to provide a comfortable camping experience, especially in cold weather. These tents come with many features that make them well-suited for use with a heating source, such as a wood-burning stove.

  1. Materials: Canvas is a popular choice for hot tents with stoves due to its breathability, durability, and natural insulation properties. It can withstand the intense heat generated by the wood-burning stove and is less prone to melting or catching fire compared to synthetic materials. Some hot tents incorporate synthetic materials like polyester or nylon for specific purposes, such as reducing weight.
  1. Frame Design: Aluminum or steel poles for their frame. These materials strike a balance between strength and weight, ensuring that the heated tent is sturdy while remaining relatively lightweight for portability.
  1. Stove Jack Design: The stove jack is a carefully crafted opening in the tent. Reinforced with fire-resistant material. It is strategically placed to allow the stovepipe to exit the tent while preventing sparks or embers from coming into direct contact with the tent fabric.
  1. Reinforced Roof: The tent's roof is often reinforced to support the weight of a stove pipe. This reinforcement ensures that the tent structure can safely accommodate the stove without compromising its integrity. Our camping hot tents for sale are designed to accommodate specific types of wood-burning stoves. These stoves are compact, portable, and feature a sealed combustion chamber to maximize heat efficiency and minimize smoke inside the tent. Stoves with a door gasket are airtight and more efficient.
  1. Ventilation: To retain heat during stove use, they also have ventilation options to regulate airflow. This is essential to prevent condensation inside the tent, which can be problematic in cold weather when using synthetic tents.
    • Windows and Screen Doors: To prevent condensation and regulate airflow, hot tents with stove should have windows and possibly screen doors. Mesh windows and mesh screen doors allow for ventilation without letting in bugs.
    • Condensation Management: Managing condensation is crucial in cold weather. Canvas hot tents have minimum condensation as the canvas breathes. Synthetic heated tents can have significant condensation issues in cold weather with a stove.
  1. Types of Hot Tents for Sale
    • Wall Tents: Wall tents have vertical walls that increase interior space. They often have a rectangular or square footprint and are suitable for larger groups. Allows much more usable space, especially with 6-foot side walls.
    • Tipi Tents: Resembling traditional Native American tipis, these tents are conical in shape and provide a spacious interior. They are easy to set up and have a central pole for support.
    • Bell Tents: A bell tent is a type of tent that is named for its distinctive shape, which resembles a bell. These tents typically have a circular footprint with a central pole supporting the peak of the tent and an open interior. The walls of the tent slope outward, giving it a distinctive bell-like appearance. Normally much unused space along walls, as the walls are normally 2 or 3 feet. Bell tents sometimes have a synthetic material that can cause condensation issues.
    • Cabin Tents: Cabin-style tents have a boxy shape, resembling a small cabin.
  1. Size Options: Camping hot tents for sale come in various sizes to accommodate the number of occupants and camping needs. Larger heated tents are suitable for group camping, while smaller ones are more appropriate for solo or two-person trips.
  1. Snow Skirts (Sod Cloths): In winter camping scenarios, tents must have a vinyl sod cloth along the bottom perimeter. This sod cloth helps keep snow from blowing into the tent while providing better insulation from the elements.
  1. Guy Lines and Stake Points for Stability: Canvas hot tents with stoves usually come with guy lines and stake points to secure the tent to the ground. This helps enhance stability, especially in windy conditions.
  1. Zippered Doors and Windows for Convenience: Canvas hot tents often feature zippered doors and windows for easy access and improved ventilation control. Some tents may have multiple doors for added convenience.
  1. Fire Safety Considerations: Users must follow strict safety guidelines when using a wood-burning stove inside a tent. This includes proper stove installation, adequate clearance from tent walls, and precautions to prevent accidental fires.

Canvas has inherent fire-resistant properties, which add a safety factor when using wood-burning stoves inside the tent. While not completely fireproof, canvas tents smolder rather than ignite when exposed to flames. Synthetic material melts immediately when in contact with a flame or stove. When using a stove inside a tent, a fire mat is always recommended.

All of our camping hot tents for sale represent a specialized and carefully engineered solution for cold-weather camping. The materials, design, and safety features of our heated tents work together to create a comfortable and secure shelter for outdoor enthusiasts facing harsh winter conditions.

What is a canvas hot tent with stove jack?

All of our Wilderness tents have a fireproof stove jack, which allows the stove pipe to go safely through the roof. A hot tent with stove jack should have a minimum of 18" square of fireproof material.

Stove jacks vary in size. Double-check the stove you are purchasing to ensure the hot tent with stove jack fits the stove pipe size.

A hot tent with stove works more efficiently if the stove jack is located on the roof. Stove jacks inside walls require two pipe elbows and are more difficult to set up. Additionally, stove pipes going out of walls are much more likely to become disconnected, especially during windy conditions.

Is a hot tent with a floor available?

The Wilderness canvas hot tents only have a stake-in floor option. No sewn-in floor is available.

The Selkirk spike hot tent has a sewn-in floor. The Selkirk is available in 3 models:

The Montana spike tent is a hot tent for sale with a floor.

What are the considerations for hot tent winter camping?

Using a hot tent for winter camping is quite common. A canvas hot tent retains heat much better than nylon tents. If winter camping in high winds, you must stake your winter hot tent very securely.

If it's snowing, put snow around the base of your heated tent to keep cold air out and warm air in. Ensure you remove the snow from the roof of your winter hot tent as soon as there is any buildup. Gently raise the roof from the inside and push up until the snow is removed. Use a broom outside, if necessary, to remove remaining snow. Be careful that you do not disconnect the stove pipe from the stove when removing snow on the roof.

No canvas hot tent or nylon tent is designed to withstand heavy snow loads. A canvas hot tent with stove can withstand heavier snow loads than nylon tents due to the heavier frame supporting a canvas tent. If you are leaving your canvas tent up for extended periods of time, I recommend frame rafters every 2 feet. However, there is no guarantee that a very heavy snow load will not collapse your tent with rafters every 2 feet.

What canvas hot tent accessories are available for camping?

Click tent accessories to view frame pole bags, rubber caps for the bottom of tent poles, coat rack, stakes, frame leg anchors, sleeves, stake-in floors, flys, extended flys, porches, and cook shacks.

Click stove accessories to view stove jacks, dampers, pipe, in-line spark arrestor, pipe elbows, water tanks, grates, and stove carry bags.

Certain accessories are available at reduced prices when purchased with a tent or stove. Reduced-price accessories are located at the bottom of the accessory pages.

Is the 6' side wall option available?

Yes, 6' side walls provide much more headroom and usable tent space. I strongly recommend you ask all tent companies about the finished height of side walls before purchasing a canvas hot tent for sale. Be advised that some tent companies advertise 5-foot sidewalls, but the actual height is only 4' 7".

6' sidewalls provide much more luxurious-looking heated tents that many glampers prefer. Walking into a tent with 6' walls looks much bigger than a tent with standard 5' walls.

6-foot option is only available on Fire-, Water-, and Mildew-treated hot tents.

What sizes do camping hot tents come in, and how many people do they fit?

  • Small hot tents start at 8 x 10. Suitable for 2 people when using a stove.
  • Large hot tents are 16 x 24. Suitable for up to 6 people when used with a stove.
  • Other sizes available are 10 x 12, 12 x 14, 14 x 16 and 16 x 20.

What are the benefits of being in a top-quality hot tent during cold weather?

The feeling of being in a good, hot tent with stove can be incredibly comforting and enjoyable. Here are some aspects that contribute to this sense of comfort:

  1. Warmth: The primary factor is, of course, the warmth inside the tent. The contrast between the cold outside and the cozy warmth inside creates a feeling of refuge. It's like having a personal sanctuary where you can escape the harsh elements.
  1. Protection From the Elements: Heated tents provide a barrier against wind, rain, snow, or any other adverse weather conditions. Knowing that you are shielded from the outside elements adds to the overall sense of security and comfort in the canvas hot tents for sale.
  1. Sounds of Nature: Depending on where you've set up your tent, you might be able to hear the soothing sounds of nature, like raindrops on the tent fabric or the distant rustling of leaves. These natural sounds can create a peaceful ambiance.
  1. Soft Lighting: If you have a source of soft, warm lighting inside the tent, it can enhance the overall atmosphere. Lanterns or gentle LED lights can create a cozy and inviting environment.
  1. Connection with Nature: While you're protected from the elements, a well-designed camping hot tent with stove can also provide a sense of connection with the surrounding nature. Mesh windows or openings allow you to see and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors while being comfortably sheltered.
  1. Companionship: Sharing a tent with friends or loved ones adds to the warmth both literally and figuratively. The shared experience of being in a cozy space together fosters a sense of camaraderie and comfort.
  1. Simplicity and Minimalism: Tents often represent simplicity and minimalism. The compact space encourages you to focus on the essentials, creating a feeling of coziness and contentment.
  1. Scent of the Outdoors: Depending on where you are camping in heated tents, you might catch the scent of pine trees, earth, or other natural fragrances. These smells can contribute to a sense of well-being and relaxation.

In summary, the feeling of comfort in our hot tents for sale is a multi-sensory experience. It involves the physical warmth, protection from the elements, the sights and sounds of nature, and the shared experience with others. It's a unique blend that creates a sense of sanctuary in the midst of the great outdoors.

Why choose a canvas camping hot tent with stove over a synthetic one?

  1. Canvas Fabric:
    • Breathability: Canvas is a natural, breathable fabric that allows moisture vapor to escape. This property is crucial in preventing condensation inside the tent, making it well-suited for cold-weather camping. Synthetic material does not breathe.
    • Insulation: Canvas provides excellent insulation, retaining heat and creating a more comfortable environment inside the tent. It helps in maintaining a consistent temperature, especially when used in conjunction with a wood-burning stove.
  1. Durability:
    • Strength: Canvas is known for its strength and durability. It can withstand exposure to the elements, resist tearing, and handle the stress of repeated setups and takedowns.
    • Longevity: With proper care, canvas hot tents can have a longer lifespan compared to some synthetic materials. They are less prone to damage from UV exposure, helping our heated tents age gracefully.
  1. Fire Resistance:
    • Natural Fire Resistance: Canvas has inherent fire-resistant properties, which add a safety factor when using wood-burning stoves inside the tent. While not completely fireproof, canvas tents tend to smolder rather than ignite when exposed to flames. Synthetic material melts immediately when in contact with a flame or a stove.
  1. Weight:
    • Heavier: Our canvas hot tents for sale are generally heavier than synthetic tents. This can be a consideration for campers who prioritize lightweight gear, especially if they plan on trekking to their camping location.

In conclusion, the choice between a canvas hot tent with stove and a synthetic tent for hot tent camping depends on various factors. Including personal preferences, camping conditions, and intended use. Canvas excels in breathability, insulation, and fire resistance, but is heavier. Synthetic tents offer advantages in terms of weight but lack the natural properties of canvas. Campers should carefully weigh these factors based on their specific needs and preferences. Additionally, canvas is a natural material, which may be considered more environmentally friendly than synthetic materials.

What are the factors of selecting a hot tent setup location?

Choosing the right location for setting up heated tents is a crucial aspect of camping, hunting, or living in a tent permanently. The site you choose can impact the comfort, safety, and longevity of your tent. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Avoid Windy Exposed Areas:
    • Reasoning: Setting up your tent in very windy and exposed areas, such as fields or prairies, can pose significant challenges. Tents act like giant sails, and constant exposure to strong winds can lead to issues like flapping, weakened seams, and torn canvas.
    • Recommendation: Opt for sheltered and protected areas within trees when possible. This natural windbreak can provide a buffer against strong gusts and reduce the strain on your canvas hot tent for sale with stove.
  1. Proper Tent Staking:
    • Reasoning: Properly staking down your tent is essential for stability, especially in windy conditions. Inadequate staking can result in tents being blown away, leading to potential damage and safety risks.
    • Recommendation: Use all eave and ridge end grommets for ropes and ensure that stakes are at least 18 inches in length. Position the stakes at a 45-degree angle away from the tent, providing secure anchoring. This helps resist lateral forces and prevents the tent from lifting.
  1. Protection Against Wind:
    • Reasoning: If you find yourself in an open, windy area, taking additional measures to protect heated tents from strong winds is crucial. The constant flapping of the camping hot tent’s fabric can weaken seams and result in tears.
    • Recommendation: Consider using natural barriers like hay bales to reduce the impact of strong winds. Creating a windbreak can shield the tent and prevent excessive flapping, preserving the integrity of the tent fabric.
  1. Caution with Extended Fly in Windy Conditions:
    • Reasoning: Extended flies, especially in windy conditions, can be prone to damage. The exposed section can act as a catch for wind, leading to potential destruction of the fly, as well as weakened seams and torn fabric.
    • Recommendation: Exercise caution when using a canvas hot tent with an extended fly in windy conditions. It might be advisable to remove the fly until the wind lessens to prevent flapping and potential damage. In such conditions, the focus should be on protecting the tent and its components from the adverse effects of wind.
  1. Potential Trees Falling: Before camping in a wooded area, always inspect surrounding trees that can fall on the campsite.
  1. Positioning of Tent: Attempt to have the stove jack side downwind of the prevailing wind direction. This ensures sparks and embers are blown away from the roof.

Remember, these recommendations are aimed at ensuring the longevity and functionality of our canvas hot tents for sale, especially in challenging weather conditions. Being proactive in selecting a suitable location and taking precautions against environmental elements can significantly contribute to a positive camping experience in heated tents.

What are the factors to consider when using a camping hot tent with stove?

Hot tent wood stoves in nylon tents that have sparks land on the roof have a very high probability of burning holes in the roof due to the nature of synthetic fabrics.

A canvas hot tent with stove significantly reduces the probability of sparks burning a hole in the roof because canvas is much thicker and more durable. Any hot tent made of a synthetic fabric is much more prone to have spark holes in the roof.

If you decide to buy a synthetic material hot tent for sale with stove, you should have some type of tarp fly to protect your roof if using a wood stove.

It is also recommended that a fly tarp be used on a canvas tent roof. It is much cheaper to replace a roof fly tarp than to replace a hot tent due to holes in the roof.

If using a hot tent with a propane stove, be very careful. Always double-check all propane fitting connections with soapy water before use. Any propane leak will create bubbles. A leaking propane fitting can cause death.

What models of camping hot tent stoves are the most commonly used?

We have two stove models normally used for our canvas hot tents for sale. Lighter stoves are also available for heated tents.

Wilderness tent stove rectangle design with 3 different sizes. Standard model, stove, pipe, damper, shelf, rain cap spark arrestor. The Deluxe model also includes a water tank and grate.

Yukon tent stove round design with 3 different sizes. Standard model, stove, pipe, damper, shelf, rain cap spark arrestor. The Deluxe model also includes a water tank and grate.

It is recommended that you have fireproof material under any hot tent with stove. It is a definite requirement in a hot tent with a synthetic floor. A hot ember can easily fall out of the stove when the stove door is opened. Tent floors are usually made of synthetic material and start on fire rapidly. A roll-up fireproof stove mat is available.

A hot tent with stove normally has a fireproof material on the wall next to the stove. Stoves can get very hot. When a nylon tent wall touches a hot stove, it will melt immediately or possibly catch on fire. Our canvas hot tents for sale are much safer than nylon tents when a wood stove is used to heat. I use a stove heat shield attached to the frame next to my canvas hot tent. Tents billow in the wind, especially synthetic lightweight tents, and the tent wall can get dangerously close to a stove. Some tent companies locate their stove jack where the wood stove is only 18" from the side wall. I prefer a farther spacing. The Wilderness camping hot tent with stove has a minimum 22" from the sidewall.
