General Info

An internal frame is strong and can withstand high winds and snowstorms.  A frame tent for packing in is available.

Be advised that frames that use cables are much weaker than normal frames.  Cables are only used on frames that are not strong.  Frames that have 3/4 " conduit or thin walled aluminum frames normally have cables. 3/4 " Conduit  frame has approximately 1/3 less strength than a 1" conduit frame.

Our most popular frame is the Wilderness steel conduit frame, 1 1/8" outside diameter. View conduit frames for more info.

Tent frame fittings are available to make your own frame.  Building with tent frame fittings reduces the overall cost of frame normally $200-$400 depending on size of tent frame.

The frame tent is designed to not fit tight on the frame.  If you want your tent to have a tighter tent on the frame, set your tent up and spray it down with water inside and out, especially on the seams. All tent canvas will shrink 1-3 % after it becomes wet. The seams have small needle holes which will close when sprayed with water.

If you are not concerned about a slightly loose tent, the tent will naturally shrink overtime as a result of the dew and condensation.

Never have a skin tight tent on a frame tent. When a tent is skin tight on a frame there is tremendous pressure on the seams and zippers.  Eventually the seams will loosen or tear.  A tight zipper will eventually fail. Same process as when a person wears skin tight jeans.

Frames cannot be returned or refunded as each frame is made for a specific tent.

I strongly encourage you to look at my tent frame angle kit if you are on a limited budget.  Purchasing angle kits and then purchasing 1” inside diameter, thin walled, electrical conduit at a local hardware store is the most economical approach to purchasing an internal frame. Internal frame shipping charges are very high due to the weight and length of an internal frame.

If you purchase an angle kit I will provide pole cut list to cut your frame poles after you measure your tent.  Typical frame  tent savings using an angle kit on a 12x14 internal frame is $250 including shipping.  Normally, it takes about an hour to make a frame.  Only tool required is a hack saw,  pipe cutter or any other tool you have that cuts metal pipe.

If you have a tent made from another company, you must provide the following measurements of your tent for us to make a custom frame:

wall height (A),

rafter/slope length (B),

width ( C ),

ridge length ( D ).

See diagram below for  specific measuring instructions. Double check your measurements when measuring all canvas tents.

Add A, B, C, D Measuring diagram from our How to Measure a Tent.

The four basic types of tent frames:

1. Internal Frame. Aluminum canvas tent frames or galvanized steel canvas tent frames are normally used by individuals tent camping near a road. However, lightweight aluminum tent frames can be easily packed in on horses.  Aluminum tent poles should be tied tightly together to reduce rattling that might spook your horse.

2. Angle Kits. You can easily make your own canvas tent frame by purchasing 1" electrical conduit from local hardware stores. Purchasing an angle kit and 1" steel conduit is much cheaper than purchasing and shipping a complete tent frame. Steel tent poles are very heavy and shipping is expensive. We have both fixed and adjustable angle kits for canvas tents available.

3. A Frame. Galvanized steel, two models, internal or external. Can be used near a road or packing in on horses.
Internal OR External A Frame, prices and information - recommended.

4. Lodge Pole Frame. Normally used by re-enactors or individuals who pack in on horses and make their own tent poles using lodge poles. Click Lodge pole frame to view picture.
