I live in a canvas wall tent six to seven weeks a year while hunting elk, deer, and bear in the Idaho wilderness. I designed the Wilderness canvas tent based on my tenting experience of 50 years. All canvas tents and stoves have been thoroughly tested in the harshest weather conditions. I offer top-quality canvas tents for sale at very affordable prices.

Canvas tents for sale are available in 5 categories:
PACKAGES are available for purchase for individuals who want to have a complete setup for canvas tent camping. The most popular package will include the tent, frame, stove, and tarp fly to protect the roof.
You can also buy a canvas tent that has been customized for you. Options include window location and size, stove jack placement, plastic see-through windows, air conditioning vents, screen doors, porches, and cook shacks.
Available on Wilderness fire-treated models. The 6-foot side wall option provides much more usable space for about a 10 percent increase in cost.
The Wilderness canvas tents are the same models we also sell as glamping tents, hot tents, and winter tents. Our Wilderness tents are of very high quality and are the most reinforced canvas tents available. The very high quality is why we use it on the camping canvas tent models.
Standard canvas is a plain-woven fabric made from cotton. Wall Tent Shop canvas is Army Duck with a double-fill weave, which is the highest quality canvas made. Canvas is thicker and heavier than synthetic tent materials (like nylon), giving it increased durability and a more natural, rugged look. Wall Tent Shop canvas fabric is treated with fire, water, and mildew treatments. We also offer only water and mildew treatment without the fire treatment.
Frame Construction: Wall Tent Shop canvas outdoor tents for sale can have a frame made from steel or aluminum. Openings are at each end to accommodate a lodge pole frame. An internal aluminum or steel frame gives the tent its shape and supports the canvas fabric. To reduce the cost of a frame, an angle kit can be purchased to make your own frame.
Flooring: Our Wilderness models have loose vinyl floors. Our Montana models have floors that can be sewn in or have a loose vinyl floor. We do not recommend canvas floors as the canvas will turn black and mold.
Waterproofing: Waterproof canvas tents are a necessity for any type of camping. All canvas is naturally water resistant. All our canvas tents are treated to resist water. This makes them highly effective waterproof canvas tents for wet conditions as they allow water to bead off rather than soak through. However, a tent tarp/fly is always recommended to protect the roof and prevent any possible leaks.
Breathability: Canvas is breathable, which helps prevent condensation from building up inside the canvas wall tent. Synthetic tents have condensation issues unless a door or window is open. The condensation issue is very significant in cold weather.
Insulation: Offers some insulation. The thick fabric can help keep the inside of the tent cooler in hot weather and warmer in cold weather, provided a tent stove is used. All tents become very hot inside during the summer when the sun shines directly on the tent. You may want to buy canvas tents for sale with screen doors and screen windows to help reduce the temperature inside.
UV Protection: Canvas provides some level of UV protection, though prolonged exposure to the sun will cause the fabric to degrade. A tent tarp/fly will help protect the canvas tent from UV degradation.
Longevity: Canvas longevity is better than synthetic materials. Well-maintained canvas camping tents can last for decades. Some of my personal tents are over 20 years old and still in great shape. — Rich, Owner.
Heavy-duty: Our heavy-duty double-fill weave canvas in our Wilderness model is much less likely to tear or puncture than thinner canvas or synthetic materials.
A canvas tent is a type of outdoor shelter made from canvas fabric, which is a heavy-duty, woven textile. These tents are popular for camping, hunting, and glamping. They are known for their durability, breathability, and ability to provide comfort in various weather conditions. Common models are wall tents, bell tents, dome tents, and A-frame tents. We specialize in canvas wall tents.

At Wall Tent Shop, we use only the highest quality and longest-lasting canvas for our camping tents. For that reason, we have chosen to use Army Duck double-fill canvas for all of our Wilderness models.
Army Duck canvas is known for its durability, strength, and high water resistance, making it an excellent choice for rugged outdoor activities. Army Duck is rated as a superb 4-season, all-weather canvas.
Army Duck canvas is made with two-ply yarns in both the lengthwise and widthwise directions, making it denser, smoother, and sturdier than regular canvas. This is called a "double-fill" weave. Some companies only use single-fill canvas, which is of lower quality.
The Bottom Line: Army Duck is high-quality canvas that is extremely durable, strong, breathable, mold-resistant, and weather-resistant.
Normally, all Wilderness models are in stock. I keep 1,000-1,500 in inventory. Most Wilderness tents ship within 2 days of ordering.
Montana tents normally ship 2-4 weeks after ordering. Each tent is made to order.
Reenactor Civil War and Trader tents are in stock. Ship time is 1-2 days after the order.
Spike tents ship within 1-2 days of ordering.
The size required is based on the number of people in the tent, tent storage, whether a stove will be used, and the comfort and space required. Click tent sleeping capacity to view diagrams of each tent size with recommended sleeping capacity.
Some competitors list totally unrealistic sleeping capacities for their tents. For example, a competitor states an 8’ x 10’ tent has a sleeping capacity of 6. Not possible. Wall Tent Shop capacity recommendations are based on 50 years of sleeping in tents and the average space and comfort requirements per individual. — Rich, Owner.
Yes, it is very weather-resistant. As explained previously, our tents use Army Duck double-fill canvas, the highest quality canvas available, and a very naturally water-resistant canvas. In addition, all tents are treated with a water and mildew treatment, which increases water resistance.
The tent has a storm flap on both doors that protects the zippers and helps keep the wind out. At the bottom of the tent is a 12" vinyl sod cloth that is sewn into the canvas wall. The vinyl sod cloth keeps the wind and rain from blowing in under canvas camping tents. The ridge ends have flaps to keep the wind from blowing in. In addition, I recommend a fly/tarp to protect the roof.
The Wilderness is the strongest and most durable of all canvas tents for sale. It is made of Army Duck double-fill canvas, has a double layer of canvas on the ridge, has webbing reinforced eaves with D rings, and is reinforced at all stress points. YKK zippers, the industry standard, are used for all door and window zippers. No other tent on the internet is more reinforced than the Wilderness. It is a rugged tent that can be used in the most demanding and harshest environments.
We have a 2-year warranty to demonstrate its quality. Most other companies only have a 1-year warranty. Buy canvas tents with 100% confidence.
Read our customer canvas tent reviews and Google reviews of 4.8 to confirm the outstanding quality of our Wilderness tents.
Setup is very easy using an internal metal frame. No tools are required. Watch a tent setup video here. Setup is much easier with 2 or 3 people. After setting up the first time, the setup becomes much quicker. I color-code the last 3 inches of my tent frame rafter and eave poles for quick identification. The legs have rubber leg bottoms on the leg poles.
A person's portability requirement and setup are based on the internal frame being used. Tents vary in weight from an 8’ x 10’ tent weighing 50 lbs to 120 lbs for a 16’ x 24’ tent. For tent camping at drive-to camp sites, one person can easily maneuver and set up an 8’ x 10’ or 10’ x 12’. A 12’ x 14’ can be set up by one person. However, two is better. Two people are required for 14’ x 16’ canvas camping tents and above.
The Wilderness is our heavy-duty canvas tent. It is designed for the harshest weather. We have photos from a satisfied customer showing 1 foot of snow on the tent roof using a lodgepole frame. It should be noted that a lodgepole frame has no rafters to support the snow load on the roof. The snow weight on the tent roof is very high. It is not recommended to have a 1-foot snow load on the roof with no rafters. However, this demonstrates and proves we have one of the best heavy-duty canvas tents for sale on the internet.
Our canvas strength is second to none. Click to view my canvas strength video where I tie a rope loop to the eave D ring and then stand on it. I put 200 lbs of pressure on the canvas. Our Wilderness canvas tents for sale are exceptionally strong and durable.
Fire-treated canvas is fire-resistant but not fireproof. A continuous flame or extreme heat will cause fire-treated canvas to burn. However, if the heat source is removed, the fire-treated canvas will stop burning. Water- and mildew-treated canvas will continue to burn even when the heat source is removed. It is recommended to buy fire-treated canvas.
Always have fire-treated material under the stove and a minimum of 12 inches to the front of the stove. Heat from the bottom of your stove can catch dead grass on fire and melt vinyl floors, indoor carpets, and canvas camping tents. When opening the stove door, hot coals can accidentally fall out of your stove and cause a fire. Again, make sure your fireproof material under the stove extends 12 inches past the stove door.
The most common fire is a stove jack canvas flap fire that spreads to the rest of the roof. The stove jack canvas flap is used to cover the stove jack hole when a stove is not in use. The stove jack flap must be tightly rolled up and securely tightened with square knots. Securing with square knots prevents the canvas flap from touching a very hot stove pipe, which can cause canvas tents to catch on fire.
Always keep very heavy-duty leather gloves near the stove in the event of any stove issues. Occasionally, strong wind gusts occur that could loosen your stove pipes. With heavy-duty leather gloves, you can quickly reassemble the stove pipes.
Wood lodgepole frames are normally used by hunters in the back country to avoid carrying a metal frame on horses. A lodgepole frame takes much more time to set up than a steel frame. When hunters return to the same location annually, they often leave the lodgepole frame standing up underneath a tree so they can easily set up their canvas outdoor tents. If someone does not use the poles for firewood, the poles can be used annually to avoid the process of making more pole frames. A lodgepole guide is provided.
I do not buy any canvas camping tents for sale from China, even though China has the lowest prices. That includes other products and materials, too. This has been my policy since 2002. Other tent companies buy most of their tents and canvas from China because it is cheaper.
China has unfair trade practices. China places import restrictions on US products and manipulates its currency for an automatic 20% discount to make prices much lower. Cheap, low-quality products take jobs from our country.
Additionally, China, per GDP, pollutes three times as much as the United States. China pollutes more each year, while the US is reducing its carbon footprint.
I occasionally have used canvas tents, but not very often. Be very careful if you’re planning to buy a used canvas tent. On some used tents, there are no labels detailing what treatments have been applied to the canvas.
We have small tents for those who hunt or camp alone. The smallest available is the 8’ x 10’, which is available in both the Wilderness and Montana models. Based on my experience, an 8’ x 10’ canvas tent is very cramped for space for two people. Remember the stove and the stove heat standoff distances normally take up most of the left wall. Therefore, the back wall and side wall will be for sleeping bags. Not much room remaining for two people's gear. Crowded, but it can be done.
I STRONGLY suggest you read our Tent Info Guide. It offers info on many subjects that will assist you in determining the correct model, size, recommended accessories, and most importantly, how to use canvas camping tents safely.
The life and appearance of your tent depend a great deal on how much care you give it. Your tent is made of the best grade of Army Duck canvas available, with the best available water and mildew treatments applied. It deserves to be taken care of, so you only have to buy a canvas tent for sale once.
Keep your tent clean. There is no better protection against mildew than a clean tent. Even on mildew-resistant canvas tents, mildew will grow on dirt that accumulates at the bottom surface of the canvas near the ground. It can eventually stain or damage the canvas and should be protected against vigorously. Mildew in its early stages can be washed off by the method described below. If you leave your tent up for extended periods of time, make sure you close it when the weather is wet and open it up to dry out when it is dry and sunny. Mildew will grow in a tent that is wet and closed up in the sunshine.
Some Things to Keep in Mind
- Some insect spray solutions, hair sprays, and other chemicals will dissolve water repellency and cause staining, so keep them away from your canvas.
- Avoid dragging your tent across abrasive surfaces such as cement.
- Do not allow large puddles of water to stand on canvas outdoor tents for any extended period of time. It will stretch the canvas if it is left standing too long and cause pocketing.
- When setting up canvas camping tents for the first couple of times, do not attempt to pull wrinkles out by yanking or forcing the canvas. A canvas shelter needs time to loosen up and conform to the shape of the frame. A new tent may have small wrinkles in it until the sun hits it for a day or two to relax the canvas.
Wash canvas tents with Losso Tent Cleaner, Woolite, or a mild dishwashing liquid. Harsh detergents will adversely affect the water repellency. Use one capful to 2 gallons of lukewarm water. Set your tent up or lay your tent down on the ground or driveway. Use a soft brush or rag to scrub lightly. Hard scrubbing or pressure sprayers can remove the water repellency from the canvas. Do not scrub hard or use a pressure sprayer. It is important to rinse very thoroughly and immediately.
When should you wash your tent? Of course, whenever you notice dirt, you should clean it off. But just as important is to clean canvas outdoor tents after a particularly dry and dusty outing. If you have been somewhere that dust has been kicked up by passing vehicles, it is important to wash the tent or at least hose it off when you get home. A layer of dust on the surface of canvas camping tents is an open invitation for mildew.
After washing and rinsing, let your tent dry thoroughly by stretching it out in the sun. Do not fold up your tent for storage while it is damp. It is not a good idea to throw a tent over a hedge or group of bushes. Many bushes contain a harmful acid that could cause damage to canvas tents for sale.
Store your tent in a dry place. Be careful to avoid rolling up twigs and leaves (especially wet ones) in the canvas before storage. These often will leave permanent stains on the canvas. Your eave ropes must be totally dry before storing your tent. If not, the wet eave ropes will cause mold and mildew.
From time to time, it may be necessary to do a small repair on your canvas tent. If you want to put together a repair kit so you do not need to buy canvas tents a second time, here is what you'll need:
- Cotton Thread: Cotton thread swells to fill your needle holes when it gets wet, thus it helps shed water more effectively.
- Needles: Use as small a needle as will go through the canvas. A small needle hole closes more tightly around the thread and helps water repellency.
- Canvas Glue: Canvas glue is waterproof and is usually used in conjunction with sewing a patch on. After the glue is spread liberally over the damaged area, the patch is put on and stitched around the edges. This is a quick and easy way to repair our canvas tents for sale.
Tents normally last 15-30 years, depending on how well it is taken care of and how much the tent is used. You don’t want to have to buy a canvas tent because yours got damaged, so avoid these common mistakes:
- Putting the tent away wet. Regardless of the water and mildew treatment on tents, the canvas will get rot and mold if put away wet.
- Holes in the tent roof from stove sparks landing on the roof. Always use a fly to protect your roof.
- UV deterioration. Exposure to direct sunlight for lengthy periods will destroy canvas. Always use a fly.
- Leaving a tent set up for extended periods of time. Water can collect on the roof in an eave trough. The trough is the area at the bottom of the roof just before the side horizontal tent frame poles. The canvas should be very tight on the frame if your canvas tents will be set up for extended periods of time, and a fly should be used. The fly should also be tight to avoid water and snow in an eave trough. Canvas saturated in water will rot and mildew regardless of water and mildew protection applied. There is no warranty for eave rot.
- Snow loads. Canvas outdoor tents are not designed for heavy snow loads like a wooden structure. Houses have rafters every two feet to carry the weight of snow on the roof. If you plan on leaving your tent set up during winter, you need to have rafters every two feet at a minimum. Remove snow daily from the roof or every couple of days, depending on snow loads.
- Not securing the canvas tent properly in high winds. A tent is just like a sail and will blow away if not roped and staked down properly. Use a minimum of 18" stakes in high winds for each eave grommet. Also, secure the tent with rope and stakes at the ridge grommets.
- Not using a fly/tarp. A fly protects your tent roof and significantly increases the tent's lifespan. You must also have a fly/tarp on your tent. A poly fly allows snow to slide off much more easily than canvas. The tent and fly must be very tight to prevent snow, rain, and ice from collecting in the canvas camping tents’ eave trough. The more water and ice accumulate in the eave trough, the deeper the eave trough becomes. Ice and water in the eave trough can collapse a tent.
