About Us

A Message From Our Owner, Rich

I designed the Selkirk spike tent by combining features from wall tents and spike tents. There is no other spike tent available that has our unique design and high quality for the price.

Selkirk Spike Tent

The Selkirk will handle snow loads better than any other spike tent because it has 3 poles, a center pole and 2 door poles, supporting the roof, compared to a normal spike tent with only 1 center pole.

NEW! Selkirk now has webbing in roof seams from top peak to sidewalls for extra reinforcement. Selkirk, by far, is the strongest and most durable spike tent available.

However, a canvas spike tent, due to its lack of rafters, cannot carry the heavy snow loads compared to a wall tent. A wall tent can withstand heavy snow loads due to its internal frame with rafters that support the roof. Just like rafters in your house, which are designed to support heavy snow loads.

The Selkirk Spike Tent is our best seller. This range tent is made from 10 oz army duck double-fill canvas, the highest quality canvas available.

2 Treatments Available:

  • Water & Mildew-Treated Canvas
  • Water, Mildew, & Fire-Treated Canvas

More roof support than other spike tent models due to its unique design with 3 roof support poles. One pole in the center and one pole at the front and back doors. Roof height is 8 - 3 at the center and 6 - 6 at each door.

ROOF SEAMS REINFORCED WITH WEBBING FOR EXTRA STRENGTH. No other spike tent has webbing on the roof seams.

Totally bug and varmint-proof with its sewn-in floor and upside-down T-zippers. T-zippers have one door zipper that is vertical with two intersecting zippers, one from each bottom side of the door.

Selkirk Standard Features

  • 4' SIDE WALLS: Many other tents have 30" side walls, which do not allow much headroom.
  • EAVES REINFORCED WITH WEBBING AND D RINGS: Much stronger than normal grommets pressed into canvas.
  • ROOF SEAMS REINFORCED WITH WEBBING FOR EXTRA STRENGTH: No other spike tent has webbing on roof seams.
  • FRONT & BACK DOORS: Doors have YKK zippers and storm flaps with buckles. For safety reasons, it is best to have a back door in a canvas spike tent when you have a sewn-in floor. If you ever have a fire (or a bear) in a spike tent, an exit out of either end is necessary. In an emergency, you might not have the time to find a knife to slice through the back of a tent for a quick exit.
  • 2 SIDE WINDOWS: Windows have screen mesh with zippered flaps on the inside with velcro.
  • STOVE PIPE OPENING: Opening with 5" with a pattern for 6" if needed.
  • DOUBLE LAYER OF CANVAS ON RIDGE: Double layer to reinforce stress points.
  • RANGE TENT BAG
  • 200 FEET OF ROPE AND TENSIONERS
  • ALUMINUM POLES
    • 3 POLE ROOF SUPPORT DESIGN: Front - center - back - poles allow for extra headroom at the front and the rear of the spike tent for easy entry and more standing room inside compared to single and double pole spike tents.
      • The longest interior aluminum pole is 31": Outside diameter of interior aluminum poles, 1 1/4".
    • OUTSIDE WALL POLES: 1 on each corner and every 3' along eaves. Spike tent wall poles are 3/4 " aluminum outside diameter. The middle outside wall support poles are not shown in some photos.
  • SEWN-IN FLOOR
      • HEAVY-DUTY 18 OZ VINYL: Competitor floors are usually 10 or 12 oz. Our 50% heavier and thicker vinyl helps prevent punctures in the floor when you step on a sharp pebble or sharp twig under the floor.
        • Be advised, some companies have sewn-in floors but do not have extra door zippers that are parallel to the ground, only a flap that covers the sewn-in floor. These competitors’ spike tents are not snake or bug-proof.
      • TUB DESIGN: Means the floor has no seams touching the ground. Tub design floors are less likely to ever have a leak. The tub floor will have a floor wrinkle in the corners due to the tub design, with the floor lifted off the ground. Well worth the wrinkle, so the floor seams are not on the ground with a possibility of a leak. Due to the tub design of the range tent, do not place a cot or something heavy directly beside the wall, as it could tear the floor-to-wall seam.
      • Floors do not have a cut-out or zipper area for the stove.
        • A cut-out or zipper area for the stove allows insects and varmints to enter through the cut-out area of the canvas spike tent. Also, sometimes water pools under the stove when a cut-out floor is used. We use a continuous floor with a mat under the stove to keep out bugs, rodents, and water.
      • Floor and side walls sewn together with black webbing for extra reinforcement and strength.

Tent Options

  • FLY IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: There are thousands of needle holes in your tent. Occasionally, a needle hole does not close when the tent gets wet. The only way to ensure your tent does not leak is to put a fly on your tent.

Fly provides protection from:

  1. Stove pipe sparks on the roof, burning pin holes in the canvas.
  2. UV rays.
  3. Fly provides another moisture barrier.
  4. Allows water and snow to run off the roof easily, as fly is a smooth poly material.
  5. Rainwater and snow are forced 1 foot from the side of the range tent because the fly extends 1 foot past each side wall.
  6. Keeps your canvas spike tent clean.

If you get tree pitch or tree resin on your roof, you will need a strong detergent to remove the pitch or resin. The harsh detergent will also remove the fire, water, and mildew treatment. You will have leaks in the canvas at every location where the strong detergent was used.

  • FRONT & BACK SCREEN DOORS: Spans the entire width of the tent. Provides great ventilation. Inverted T screen door zippers make the tent totally bug-proof.
  • STAKES: 18" rebar double T, 18" rebar.
  • FIRE MATS for sewn-in floor. FOR YOUR SAFETY, you must have fireproof material under your stove, extending a minimum of 12" to the front and 6" to the sides and the back. We have fire 3' x 4' mats available that go under the stove for $35 when ordered with a spike tent.

Size & Weight Info.

SIZE

  • 10’ x 10’ has 100 square feet.
  • 12’ x 12’ has 144 square feet (44% more floor space than a 10’ x 10’ spike tent)
  • 14’ x 14’ has 196 square feet (36% more than a 12’ x 12’)
  • COMFORTABLE SLEEPING: Capacity along walls in 7' cots. Add 1 person if sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag.
    • 10’ x 10’ (2 people)
    • 12’ x 12’ (3 people)
    • 14’ x 14’ (4 people)
  • Front & Back Door Height: 6' 4"
  • Ridge Height:
    • 10’ x 10’ and 12’ x 12’: 7' 11"
    • 14’ x 14’: 9'
  • A 4" gap between the fly and the top of the sidewall is recommended. Gap is accomplished by having the fly rope stakes farther away from the canvas spike tent than the tent eave rope stakes. If there is no gap, the top of your poles will rub a hole in the fly of the range tent.
  • 3 roof support poles provide much stronger roof support during snow loads than the single or double pole spike tents. A single-pole spike tent is especially vulnerable to snow loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spike tent?

It is designed for quick setup and is easy to transport. Its normal design can be a pyramid style or a modified wall tent. A modified wall tent design looks like a pyramid sitting on top of 4 vertical sidewalls. Sidewall height can be 2-4 feet. Wall Tent Shop spike tents have 4-foot side walls for more usable space.

What type of frames are used?

Most spike tents have 1 center support pole. We have a center pole in the center and support poles on each end to provide much more roof support.

The side walls are supported by vertical poles and staked guy ropes.

Aluminum frames or steel frames are available. We offer heavy-duty aluminum poles to reduce weight.

Can it handle heavy snow loads?

No. Spike tents do not have roof support like a wall tent internal frame. Internal wall tent frames have rafters similar to house rafters. Without rafters, there can be a tremendous amount of roof snow load pressure. As necessary, inside the range tent, push up on the roof to make the snow slide off the roof. Never leave it set up during possible snow periods unless it can be checked on daily and snow removed. Wall Tent Shop has 3 roof support poles and reinforced webbing on the roof seams. This design makes it much stronger and can handle snow loads better than other canvas spike tents.

What sizes of spike tents are available?

Sizes normally available are 10’ x 10, 12’ x 12’, and 14’ x 14’.

Headroom is only available near the center of the tent due to it having shorter walls than a standard wall tent.

How well do spike tents handle heat or cold?

Spike tents, like all tents, are very warm in hot weather. Side windows and screen doors are necessary for proper ventilation.

In cold weather, they are very easy to heat. The roof peak and side walls are lower, making less space to heat than a similar-sized wall tent.

The same stove safety requirements are necessary for any tent structure.

How long do spike tents last?

15-30 years if a person takes proper care and performs yearly maintenance.

Always dry and clean your tent after each camping trip to increase its lifespan.

Are spike tents waterproof?

No canvas tent is totally waterproof. Canvas is naturally water-resistant and can be water/mildew-treated to increase water resistance. There are thousands of needle holes in any canvas tent roof. Sometimes, not all holes completely seal when water is applied to the canvas. It is always best to put on a rain tarp to ensure the roof of your range tent is totally waterproof.
