WHAT IS A TRADER TENT?
Trader Tents are also known as sutler tents and merchant tents. Trader tents are used primarily at reenactment or a rendezvous to sell goods. Sutler tents are historical period tents from the 1800's to the Civil War.
Trader tents are used as both a merchant shop and a living area during a reenactment or rendezvous. Items sold from these merchant tents are historical period goods. Items sold include leather items, tools, knives, clothing, hats, food, drink and trade goods.
Merchant tents are made from heavy canvas. There are 3 basic tent designs that are commonly used. Wall tents with vertical walls and a ridge line. Wall tents are the most frequently used. Very sturdy and many sizes available. Marquee tents have a large open area to the front often used for displays. Marquee tents are known for their artisan style and colorful design. Wedge tents have a very simple triangle design. Much less space but is very quick to set up and take down.
These merchant tents are normally set up with wooden poles. No modern hardware using cloth instead of a plastic type material. Hemp rope is used for authenticity for eave ropes with wood or period correct metal stakes. Sutler tents often are decorated with period products for authenticity.
Internal frames made using angle kits.
If your organization allows modern internal steel frames the most economical method is purchasing angle kits and making your own frame from steel 1 inch inside diameter conduit available at all hardware store. View

FIRE RESISTANT CANVAS: Meets CPAI 84 fire retardant code. If a tent is not specifically treated for fire resistance it will burn quickly when in contact with a flame source. Fire resistant canvas will only burn when there is a flame source present on the canvas. When you remove the flame source the wall tent will stop burning. However, there is no wall tent made that will not burn from high heat. It is recommended that all tents that have any type of stove or have a flame source inside the tent have a fire extinguisher readily available.
