These stakes are best used for staking out your guy lines when using a fly.  The guy line from your tent will run to the horizontal bar and the guy line from your fly will run to the top hook.  This will allow airflow between your tent and fly and will prevent moisture buildup. Guy lines keep your canvas tent secured to the ground.
