Wood stoves can release sparks that land on the tent roof. Synthetic fabrics such as nylon are particularly vulnerable, and sparks can easily burn holes in them.
Canvas is thicker and more durable, so a canvas hot tent is less likely to develop spark holes. However, using a protective fly tarp is recommended with both synthetic and canvas tents. Replacing a damaged fly is usually much less expensive than replacing the tent.
Exercise extreme caution when using a propane stove inside or near a hot tent. Before each use, check every propane fitting with soapy water. Bubbles indicate a gas leak.
Never use equipment with a leaking propane connection. Propane leaks can cause fires, explosions, serious injury, or death.
Place fire-resistant material beneath any tent stove. This protection is essential when the tent has a synthetic floor because hot embers can fall from the firebox when the stove door is opened. Synthetic flooring can ignite quickly.
A roll-up fireproof stove mat is available:
Place fire-resistant material or a heat shield between the stove and the nearest tent wall. Tent stoves can become extremely hot. A synthetic wall that touches the stove may melt immediately or catch fire.
Tent walls can also billow inward during windy conditions, especially on lightweight synthetic tents. This movement may bring the fabric dangerously close to the stove.
A stove heat shield is available:

Some manufacturers position the stove jack so the stove sits only 18 inches from the sidewall. The Wilderness camping hot tent provides a minimum distance of 22 inches from the sidewall.
Always follow the tent and stove manufacturers’ clearance, ventilation, installation, and safety requirements.
Two stove models are commonly used with our canvas hot tents. Lighter stove options are also available.
