When comparing canvas wall tents, small construction details can make a significant difference. The attachment points used for guy ropes are especially important because they help transfer wind and weather forces from the tent to the ropes and stakes.
Two common attachment systems are metal grommets and steel D-rings. Either system can serve a purpose, but the strength of the complete attachment—including the surrounding canvas, webbing, stitching, ropes and stakes—matters more than the metal fitting alone.
A grommet is a metal ring pressed through a hole in the canvas or reinforcing material. A rope can be passed through the opening and secured to a stake.
Grommets are compact, inexpensive and commonly used on tents, tarps, flies and other outdoor equipment. They can perform well when installed through properly reinforced material.
A D-ring is a metal attachment point shaped like the letter D. On a properly constructed wall tent, the D-ring is normally secured to strong webbing that is sewn into a reinforced section of the tent.
Instead of pulling directly against a hole in the canvas, the rope pulls on the D-ring and webbing assembly. The webbing can distribute that force across a larger reinforced area.
Wind does not pull on just one part of a wall tent. It creates pressure across the roof, walls and frame. Guy lines transfer some of that force to the ground. If an attachment point is weak, excessive movement or sudden loading can damage the fitting or the surrounding fabric.
Webbing sewn along the eave can help spread the load beyond one attachment point. When steel D-rings are connected to that reinforced webbing, the rope pulls against the larger reinforcement system instead of relying only on a small hole through the canvas.
