CANVAS TENTS
Canvas Tents and frames for hunting tents are significantly below retail. Quality Wilderness canvas tents are a necessity in the back country. All tents have been extensively tested. I live in a canvas tent or spike tent six to seven weeks a year while hunting elk, deer, and bear in the Idaho Wilderness.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION
SUNFORGER IS A WATER & MILDEW TREATMENT ADDED TO CANVAS. IT IS NOT A TYPE OF CANVAS.
" ALL " SUNFORGER TREATED
CANVAS IS IMPORTED FROM CHINA, INDIA & PAKISTAN.
In fact, all tent canvas is imported.
THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF WATER & MILDEW TREATMENT: SUNFORGER,
PARAFFIN & MARINE
GRADE.
I SELL DIFFERENT MODELS OF CANVAS WALL TENTS USING THE THREE DIFFERENT
WATER & MILDEW TREATMENTS. THERE
IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY OF THESE 3 WATER & MILDEW TREATMENTS.
STRENGTH OF CANVAS IS BASED
ON THE QUALITY OF CANVAS - NOT THE TREATMENT.
IF YOU START THE WATER & MILDEW
TREATMENT PROCESS WITH GOOD OR POOR QUALITY CANVAS - YOU WILL END
UP WITH GOOD OR POOR QUALITY CANVAS REGARDLESS OF WHICH TREATMENT
IS USED.
BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE SELLING THOUSANDS OF TENTS, AND MY CUSTOMER COMMENTS, ANY
CLAIM SUNFORGER or ANY OTHER TREATMENT IS A BETTER TREATMENT - IS JUST A PERSONAL OPINION.
IT IS THE SAME TYPE OF CLAIM WHEN A PERSON SAYS HIS DODGE
TRUCK IS BETTER THAN A FORD OR A CHEVY. IT IS ALL PERSONAL PREFERENCE.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CALL OR EMAIL ME if
you are just starting canvas tent camping or if you have any questions spike hunting tents, equipment or quality to insure

you have on hunting tents, tent stoves, angle kits and frames - Rich.

Recommendation When
wetting down your canvas tent for shrinkage and also when it rains/snows,
ensure that you have guy ropes/side ropes and wall stakes on your
new canvas wall tent to insure it only shrinks the normal 1-2%
shrinkage and that it shrinks evenly. Otherwise it may shrink more
than 2% and unevenly and may not fit your internal frame properly.
ALL WILDERNESS TENTS ARE ON SPECIAL.
I buy the Wilderness hunting tents in large quantities at a reduced
cost and I am passing on my reduced costs to the customer. Many customers
ask me, "what is the best bang for the buck?" The Wilderness .
The WILDERNESS hunting tents have the following standard (free) features that
are normally options on other tents. THESE STANDARD FREE FEATURES NORMALLY COST $100-$200 ON OTHER TENTS as they are normally options. Standard (free) wilderness tent features:

(2) Free storm flap with buckles over front and back doors.
(3) Free reinforced ridge with an extra layer of canvas, double stitched.
(4) Free large tent bag.
(5) Free webbing on both eaves with
heavy D rings to reinforce the eave where the most stress is on a
canvas tent. A much more durable and stronger system than grommets
pressed into canvas eaves on a standard tent.
(6) Free 5 foot finished wall height.
There is no other tent on the market that has the Wilderness free standard features, I guarantee it. Other standard features on the Wilderness hunting tents include
(7) Free zippered front door

The Hunter canvas tents are "Sun forger
- Double Fill - Army Duck". The Hunter tent can be modified/custom
made to any specification. Canvas hunting tents are available in water and mildew resistance treated
and also in FIRE treated, water and mildew resistance treated. Stove
jack and windows can be placed wherever you want them. Also available
are zippered corners with roll up sides with tie strings. Awnings,
porches and cook shacks can be ordered at time of tent purchase.
Or you can order an awning, porch or cook shack for a tent you already have.
Tent room dividers that tie to rafters of an internal frame are also available. These Montana canvas tent room dividers have a zipper centered in the room divider. Flap doors are also an option if you do not want a zippered door. Tent wall height from five to eight feet is also an option. Eave socks can also be added to your hunter tent if you want to connect your tent frame to the frame for an awning porch or cook shack If you want a custom, quality made tent, the Wilderness hunting tent is the model you need to order.
Be Careful. Some companies list canvas tents with very, very low prices. The first question you should ask is, "Is the tent treated for water and mildew resistance? " If a hunting tent has not been treated, it will shrink 10-12%. Every time the tent gets wet and shrinks you will have to cut down your internal steel frame because the incredible shrinking tent will no longer fit your frame. Additionally, a tent not treated for water and mildew resistance will mildew and rot very quickly.
SHIPPING PRICES are applicable to only lower 48 states. Canada and Alaska customers call or e-mail for shipping quotes.
WILDERNESS TENTS WILL SHIP 1 TO 2 BUSINESS DAYS AFTER PAYMENT IS RECEIVED
You can have a 2% discount on all items if you pay by cashier's check or money order. My costs are reduced if you don't use credit cards and I'm just passing the savings onto the customer.
USED TENTS:
I occasionally get used wall tents for sale, but not very often. Be very careful buying a used tent for sale because there is really no way to verify of the seller. On some used canvas tents for sale, there are no labels detailing what treatments have been applied to the canvas.
My Wilderness tents on special are not much more than what you would pay for good used canvas wall tents. I recommend you do some comparison shopping on used wall tents versus new tents. If possible, before buying a used wall tent, set up the tent on its frame and wet it down with water to determine if there are any leaks.
I have sold many new tents to customers who recently purchased a "used tent" that was not properly treated (or not treated at all) and the used wall tent leaked all over, especially at the seams. Not a good experience at the hunting camp. I occasionally have a wall tent sale so check my prices occasionally and you might be better off buying a new tent - if your budget allows.
WALL TENTS FOR SALE:
I have many canvas tents for sale on my web site and it can very confusing trying to determine which is the best tent. Read my info guide and closely compare the standard features and options on all tents for sale. If you are having problems deciding on which tent - call me and I will try to guide you to the wall tent sale that is best for your needs.

CANVAS TENTS- ACCESSORIES 3-22
Canvas Tent accessories inside your tent can make for a more organized and comfortable camp.
Tent accessories I use:
Coat Rack. I use 2 racks. One for my clothes and the second rack to help me stay organized. I hang my hunting belt with knife on it, my elk bugle, my cow call, and cow elk urine sprayer. That way in the morning I am quickly ready for the hunt.
Camp cupboard. I use the cupboard to store food items that mice and insects like to eat. The cupboard has shelves for organizing and a zippered front to make it varmint proof.
Canvas Cupboard. This cupboard is primarily used in larger canvas tents with bigger hunting and camping groups. However, the front is not zippered.
Canvas Tent frame bags. Frame bags make storing and transporting your frame much easier. You put your frame in the frame bag at the end of the hunt and you know all the frame parts are there when you prep for your hunting trip the following year.

Canvas Tents - Purchasing Tips
Canvas Tent fly's: I strongly recommend customers buy a fly for their hunting tent:
1.A fly keeps a canvas tent clean. Pitch and sap just rains down from trees and is almost impossible to remove.
2.When it rains, a canvas tent without a fly becomes saturated If you touch the canvas tent, your tent will start leaking. Also, your rafters touching the canvas tent roof will have condensation.
Stove Rain Cap/Spark Arrestor
When purchasing a stove for a canvas tent, always buy a spark arrestor preferably with a rain cap. Spark arrestor reduces the possibility of stove sparks landing on the roofs of hunting tents. Rain cap prevents rain and snow going down your stovepipe.
Especially important, when the stove is not burning wood.
Canvas Tent Standard features
-
Determine the standard features canvas tents
have that you are considering and the cost of additional features/options
you want.
-
Most canvas tent buyers want at the minimum
these standard features:
- The above features should be standard on all canvas tents.
- If you have to pay extra for the features above - you are paying too much for your canvas tent.
- ALAKNAK TENT
I am often asked to compare an Alaknak tent with a canvas tent. Canvas tents breathe which allows moisture (your breathing) to go through the canvas tent. Alaknak tent is made from a synthetic material which does not breathe - which means condensation forms on the inside of your tent due to breathing , cooking, boiling water etc. I have never used an Alaknak so I can't provide a more detailed professional answer. However, I have many customers buy my canvas tents and get rid of Alaknak tents for the following deficiencies (according to my customers)
1) too many tent vent holes to reduce condensation inside a synthetic tent - can't keep the tent warm.
2) if the vent holes are plugged with towels, condensation begins and in the morning you wake up in a "rain forest"
3) Alaknak does not have a ridge pole to create a sharp roof - Consequently snow has difficulty sliding off roof.
4) Snow builds up in the roof corners and roof sags.
Factors to consider when purchasing a tent:
- Zipper Door I recommend a back door with zipper
or window for cross ventilation for hot weather. Being in a canvas tent without
a back door or window is miserable during hot weather.
- SIZE OF TENT: If you can't decide between
2 sizes of canvas tents , go far the larger tent. I have never heard anyone say
they wished they had bought a smaller tent. When people complain about the
size of the tent, the complaint is the tent is too small for their requirements.
- FLY: Fly is always recommended. Sometimes
during rainy days, a canvas tent will leak where the canvas touches the frame.
If this wicking or leaking occurs the only solution is to purchase a tent fly.
The fly prevents prevents any rain or snow from touching the canvas so no
wicking/leaking can occur. Other benefits of a fly (1) prevents sparks from
the stovepipe burning holes in your canvas roof (2) protects canvas from
ultraviolet rays which deteriorates the canvas (3) keeps your tent roof clean
from tree pitch (4) creates air space between the roof and fly which acts
an insulation area which helps keep your tent warmer.
-
Options: If you are not sure about a option
I would probably add it. It is much cheaper to add options while the tent
is under construction compared to costs after you take delivery.
- Purchasing a large canvas tent: Large canvas
tents, 14'x16' to 16'x24' can weigh from 90 - 120 pounds and can be very
difficult to set-up. Consider purchasing a blend tent, with its canvas roof
and synthetic lightweight Relite walls. The blend tent weighs approximately
40% less than an all canvas tent making it much easier to handle and set-up.
The blend tent with its lightweight Relite walls is just as durable and weatherproof
as all canvas tents
- Cook shack. A cook shack costs almost
as much as a canvas tent of equal size. Sometimes it makes more sense to buy another
tent to use as a cook shack and have the flexibility of using the smaller
tent when less people go hunting or camping.
- Color of Fly. A clear translucent fly
is best as it allows light to pass through it. If you use a dark fly during
the day it will be much darker inside your tent.
- Reinforced eaves. The eaves have the most
pressure on a tent due to tightening the roof by use of guy ropes and stakes.
If a tent fails due to snow loads, the tent normally tears near the eaves
and grommets. Insure whatever tent you buy has reinforced eaves.
