WILDERNESS CANVAS WALL TENTS ARE HIGH QUALITY. The main difference between Wilderness Canvas Wall Tents and other normal canvas hunting tents is the additional reinforcement on the Wilderness Tent which makes it stronger and more durable. The Wilderness Canvas Wall Tent has "webbing on the eaves with D rings" making it much stronger compared to having only grommets pressed into canvas eaves like normal canvas hunting tents. The webbing running the entire length of the eave distributes the pressure along the entire eave unlike grommets which has all the pressure on each grommet. Additionally, the "ridge has a double layer of canvas" for additional reinforcement. The most pressure on a canvas wall tent is at the eaves and the ridge. Be assured, the additional reinforcement on each Wilderness Hunting Tent will help provide a high quality tent that can withstand rough hunting conditions.

• Made of 10.1 oz "Double Fill" cotton - Army Duck
• Army Duck canvas wall tents have two threads twisted together to make one single thread making the canvas stronger and more durable. These double threads are woven into canvas both lengthwise and crosswise.

22. A FLY IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for any canvas wall tent you purchase. Stove sparks from the stove pipe will occasionally land on your tent and burn small holes in the roof even if you have a fire treated tent. The only way to prevent roof burn holes is a fly. A fly also provides another moisture barrier, protects the canvas from UV rays and helps keep the tent roof clean when camping under trees. If you do not have a fly on your tent, during wet conditions, where you touch the tent - it will leak. Additionally, where your rafters touch the tent roof, the frame rafters will be wet.

Floor: Loose vinyl floor. Grommets at corners for staking. Floor does not have a cut out area for stove. It is best to have a continuous floor to keeo bugs and water out. Insure you put a non flammable material under stove. We have fire proof mats available for $35.

Rain Fly: Stove jack area cut out and reinforced with webbing to match stove pipe opening in tent. Clear poly material - 100% UV protection. Fly has center ridge grommets on each end and grommets along sides. Includes ropes, tensioners. Fly is even with ends of tent and has a 8-12" overhang on sides of tent. NO stakes/spikes.

RECOMMENDATION: I strongly recommend a fly for all wilderness canvas hunting tents. The fly protects your canvas roof from sparks burning a hole in the roof. I would much rather have a spark burn hole in my fly than the tent roof. Additionally, the fly is another moisture barrier, protects the tent from UV rays and helps keep your tent clean.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS TO EVALUATE BEFORE DECIDING ON WHICH CANVAS HUNTING TENT TO PURCHASE.

DETERMINING WHAT TENT SIZE TO BUY: The amount of square footage in canvas camping tents increase tremendously when going up just one size in a tent. Insure you buy the tent size that fully meets your requirements. If you are not sure which tent size is best, chalk out the 2 sizes on your driveway and then mark out items you plan on having in the tent. Also compare the price difference between the 2 tent sizes you are considering vs the increase in square footage gained by purchasing the larger tent size.

a. A 10x12 (120 square feet) is 50% larger than a 8x10 (80 square feet)

b. A 12x14 (168 square feet) is 40% larger than a 10x12 (120 square feet)

c. A 14x16 (224 square feet) is 33% larger than a 12x14 (168 square feet)

d. A 16x20 (320 square feet) is 42% larger than a 14x16 (224 square feet)

MILDEW AND ROT: Storing a wet canvas hunting tent will cause the canvas to rot regardless of what type of water mildew treatment you have on your canvas. If setting up your tent outside to dry after hunting season is not an option, I strongly suggest you set the tent up in a garage or work shop until it is completely dry. Insure your ropes are also dry as wet ropes will cause the canvas to rot and mildew.

STOVE AREA REQUIREMENTS IN A HUNTING TENT : You must plan on a stove taking up to 7 feet along a wall in all family camping tents. There is an automatic 2 + feet standoff from the front wall due to the stove jack location. The stove itself is normally around 2 feet in length. There is normally a 3 feet heat standoff distance from the stove before you can place a cot or table.

STOVE PIPE ABOVE RIDGE OF TENT: It is best to have your stove pipe long enough to extend 6 inches or more above the tent ridge. Having the stove pipe above the tent ridge allows the wind coming from any direction to blow sparks away the tent roof thus reducing the possibility of spark holes being burnt in the roof.

FIRE TREATED CANVAS VS STOVE SPARKS: Stove sparks will burn holes in a fire treated roof.

Canvas Camping Tent Standard features

• Determine the standard features canvas hunting tents have that you are considering and the cost of additional features/options you want.
• Most canvas tent buyers want at the minimum these standard features:
  • Front door with zipper
    Stove jack
    9" - 10" vinyl sod cloth to keep canvas tents clean and sealed against the ground
    Rope with tensioners

• If the canvas camping tent you are considering purchasing does not have the standard features listed above, you need to add the costs of those features to the price of the tent before you can make a valid tent comparison.
• Some hunting tent manufacturers list common standard features as options to increase the price of the tent from an initial low advertising price.

Quality and treatment comparison:

• Determine the quality of the canvas of each tent you are considering.
• Determine if you prefer an untreated, water mildew, or water, mildew and fire treated tent.
  1. Untreated, which I strongly recommend you avoid as untreated canvas is much more likely to have mildew/mold, will shrink 10-15% and require you to frequently cut down your internal frame. Water, Mildew treated - over 50% of tent purchasers buy water mildew treated tents. Treated to resist water and mildew and will shrink only 1-3%.
  2. Water, Mildew & FIRE treated - Also treated for fire resistance.

Stove jack in sidewall: I do not have a stove jack in the side wall or end walls as an option on the Wilderness Hunting Tents as it is not a frequent option due to numerous drawbacks. It should be noted that a stove jack in the side wall or end wall requires an adjustable elbow on the stove and an adjustable elbow on the outside of the tent to allow the stove pipe to go straight up for a better draft. Additionally, there must be some type of stove pipe metal support on the outside to support the stove pipes on the outside of your tent. Otherwise, your stove pipes will work loose and smoke will get in your canvas camping tent. Another drawback is that you cannot use nesting pipe when you use an elbow to turn the stovepipe upwards on the outside of your tent. Nesting pipe has a different size of pipe for each pipe section.

Rain Fly: Stove jack area cut out and reinforced with webbing . Clear poly material- 100% UV protection. Fly center ridge grommets on each end match tent grommets to ensure fly doesn't move and accidentally hit stove pipe. Includes ropes, tensioners, stakes/spikes. A rain fly protects the roof of canvas camping tents from ultra violet rays, provides another moisture barrier, keeps the canvas roof clean by preventing sap, pitch and dirt from accumulating on the roof when the tent is set up near trees. And most importantly, the fly protects the tent roof from any stove sparks that might land on the canvas and burn pin holes in the roof. The fly is an absolute necessity if you have a relite tent with the relite roof. Sparks from the stovepipe will quickly burn pin holes in the roof resulting in leaks. The fly should rest on the tent ridge and have a 4-6 gap between the fly and the eave. This air gap allows air circulation between the fly and the canvas roof to dry the canvas when it becomes wet. If you place the fly directly onto the canvas roof there is a possibility of rot and mildew forming. If you already own a canvas camping tent and there is mildew on a tent, that area is no longer waterproof. If you currently have a canvas camping tent with a leaking roof, do not treat the canvas with canvak unless the roof leaks only at the seam. When you treat an entire roof with canvak, the canvak seals the cotton pores making your roof airtight which prevents the canvas from breathing. As a result you can get condensation inside hunting tents just like a synthetic tents.

Fly: If you already have a hunting tent and need a fly I will need the following tent info:

1. Stove jack located in roof
   1. length of tent slope of roof, the distance from top of ridge to the center of the stove jack
   2. distance from the end wall to the center of the stove jack in the roof
2. Stove jack not located in roof
   1. length of tent
   2. slope of tent

Floor: If you already have a tent and just need a loose floor I need the following tent measurements:

length of tent
width of tent

I recommend heavy vinyl floors over canvas or relite. A canvas waterproof floor will eventually soak up water. A relite floor is thin and can be punctured easier than a vinyl floor. If you order a floor it will be a thick vinyl floor unless you specify canvas or relite. All vinyl loose floors ordered will have a 5' x 5' cut out area for stove. All loose relite floors will have a 5'x5' stove cut area. If you need a good four season tent you will probably want a floor.
